Application Guide for
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2022
The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, provided by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), invites applications from overseas Chinese language teachers. This scholarship serves the purpose of satisfying the growing demands of the international community for qualified Chinese language teachers, and facilitating international education of Chinese language outside of China. The applications to Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) in particular for such a scholarship should follow the guidelines below, a version with reference to theApplication Guide for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2022released by CLEC. Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers for study of International Chinese Language Education or related majors at Chinese universities and colleges (hereinafter referred to as “host institutions”).
I. ELIGIBILITY
a) Non-Chinese citizens;
b) Should be friendly to China, have no criminal record, and abide by the laws andregulations of the Chinese government and the rules and regulations of the school;
c) In good physical and mental conditions, and with a good record of academicperformance and conduct;
d) Aspiring to work in the Chinese language education and related fields;
e) Aged between 16 and 35 (as of 1 September, 2022), with the special allowance for theage limit of 45 for applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers and that of25 for undergraduate student applicants.
II. SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS
A. Chinese Language Teacher Programs
a. Scholarship for Doctor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of OtherLanguages (DTCSOL)
The program commences in September 2022 and provides scholarship for a maximumof four academic years. Applicants shall hold a Master’s degree in majors such as TeachingChinese as a Foreign Language, Linguistics, or Teaching Chinese to Speakers of OtherLanguages. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 200 on the HSK Test (Level 6), and60 on the HSKK test (Advanced Level).
Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teachinginstitution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.
b. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of OtherLanguages (MTCSOL)
The program commences in September 2022 and provides scholarship for a maximumof two academic years. Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimumscore of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (IntermediateLevel).
Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teachinginstitution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.
c. Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of OtherLanguages (BTCSOL)
The program commences in September 2022 and provides scholarship for a maximumof four academic years. Applicants shall hold a senior high school diploma and a minimumscore of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 4) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
d. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study
The program commences in September 2022, and provides scholarship for a maximumof eleven months. International students who have benefited from similar scholarships arenot eligible.
i. For the area of TCSOL, applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test(Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
ii. For the area of Chinese Language Study, applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 onthe HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK testscore.
e. Scholarship for One-Semester Study
The program commences either in September 2022 or March 2023, and providesscholarship of a maximum of five months. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are noteligible.
Only TCSOLis available.Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3),and an HSKK test score is required.
f. Scholarship for Four-Week Study
The program commences either in July or December, 2022, and provides a four-weekscholarship. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.
For the areas of Chinese Study, ChineseLanguage plus Home-Stay Experience in a Chinese Family, and Special Four-weekProgram for Confucius Institutes, applicants are required to provide HSK test scores.The program may be organized and applied for by a recommending institution with 10-15 participants per group. Prior to the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made inconsultation with host institutions and such plan shall be submitted to CLEC for approval.
B. Scholarship for Online Programs
a) Online Program for One-year Chinese Language Studycommences in
September orMarch each year. A general Chinese proficiency test score of 180 in HSK (Level 3) isrequired, and HSKK scores are preferred.
b)Online Program for One-Semester Chinese Language Studycommences inSeptember or March each year. Generally, applicants must have an HSK score (no specificrequirements for level or score).
III. COVERAGE
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.
Only tuition fee is covered for Online Programs.
IV. APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Online registration will be available from 1 March, 2022 on the International ChineseLanguage Teachers Scholarship application website (cis.chinese.cn).
Please log on tosearch for recommending institutions and host institutions; upload application materialsonline; and track the application progress, comments and results. Scholarship holders needto confirm with BLCU to go through the procedures of studying in China,print out the scholarship certificate online, and register at BLCU on the designateddate as per the letter of admission.
The Application Deadlines (Beijing Time):
Apr. 15, 2022 (for those commencing in July)
May 15, 2022 (for those commencing in September)
Sep. 15, 2022 (for those commencing in December)
Nov. 15, 2022 (for those commencing in March 2023)
CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. Decisions will be made basedon HSK and HSKK scores and levels, and in consideration of country distribution as wellas other factors. The results will be published about three months before school starts.
V. Policies Regarding Currently Employed Chinese Language Teachers and ChineseBridge Award Recipients
a. Currently employed Chinese language teachers:
Currently employed Chinese language teachers applying for the scholarships can beexempted from submitting Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK) certificates if theycan provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the institutionwhere they work.
b. Chinese Bridge Award Recipients:
Applicants who have won the 2022 International Chinese Language Teachers ScholarshipCertificate in various Chinese Bridge competitions should submit their applicationdocuments along with their scholarship certificates to BLCU on theInternational Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.

VI. Application Documents for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
For All Applicants:
a) A scanned copy of passport photo page;
b) A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-yearvalidity);
c) A reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions.
d) A certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation)
For Degree Scholarship Program Applicants:
i. For DTCSOL students
a. An official transcript of the highest education study.
b. 2 referenceletters from professors or associate professors or experts with equivalent professional andtechnical titles in relevant fields.
c. A 3000-word personal statement in Chinese (includingknowledge of the intended field of study and research proposal).
d. The acceptance letter of the supervisor.
e. Priority will be given toapplicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completingtheir studies in China or a proof to the same effect.
ii. For MTCSOL students
a. An official transcript of the highest education study.
b. 2 referenceletters from professors or associate professors.
c. A study plan (including CV, education background, Chinese language proficiency, personal statement on research ability, research proposal, and career plan) above 800 Chinese words.
d. Priority will be given to applicants who mayprovide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in Chinaor a proof to the same effect.
iii. For BTCSOL students
a. An official transcript of the highest education study.
Other Required Application Documents
Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall provide proof ofemployment as well as a reference letter by the employer.
For applicants under the age of 18, their parents should entrust a non-Chinese citizen residing in China or a Chinese residing in Beijing with the student’s guardianship, and provide notarized guardianship guarantee statement.
Note
Applicants for one-semester and four-week program scholarship who withhold X1 or X2 visa are not eligible. Passport pages will be checked upon registration. Those with X1 or X2 visa will be deprived of scholarship. All the consequences caused by providing false documents shall be borne by applicants themselves.
Additional documents will be required by BLCU on certain conditions.
VII. OTHERS

b) Degree students are subject to the annual assessment according to theAnnual AppraisalProcedures of International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship.
c) For enrollment and other matters during the Covid-19 epidemic, please contact BLCU.
d) Students who fail to pass the pre-enrollment medical examination, withdraw from schoolmidway, or fail to report to school or suspend their studies without permission will bedisqualified for scholarship.
e) Each applicant can only apply for one scholarship provided by Chinese government. Multiple applications for different scholarships will be considered invalid and such applicants will be disqualified from scholarship.
